Due to its great location, the harbour of IJmuiden is an excellent operating base for the construction and maintenance of wind farms at sea. In addition, its location is ideal for the supply and transshipment of parts onto specially equipped ships (jack-ups). The offshore wind farm off the coast of Egmond aan Zee (Shell, Nuon) and the Prinses Amalia wind farm (Eneco) off the coast of IJmuiden are both built out of the port of IJmuiden. The offshore wind farm Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ) was set to work on 18 April 2007 and it was the first big wind farm in the North Sea off the coast of the Netherlands. The farm consists of 36 wind turbines of which each possesses a power of 3 MW. Together they provide sustainable energy for more than 100,000 households. The wind farm is located around 10 to 18 kilometres off the shore.

The demand for the services provided by the companies that are all within that one square kilometre is remarkably high and year-round: 24x7x365!
